MX25L1606E fails to read/write

Postby JuergenB » Fri Jul 08, 2022 5:51 pm

Hi,

I tried to read this SOIC8 in circuit, but this failed, so i cut the VCC Line and was able to read the Flash.
After viewing the Binary, I changed some bit and tried to flash again.

Flash failed, Software claims to much power consumption…
So i removed the MX25 from the board and tried again.
Read was „fine“ but strange, writing data was never possible with programmer.

Next I used my Old True Willem GQ-4x and used the same Clip…
Reading took a few minutes longer, but the binary was different.
Is seems that Reveltronics programmer missed some blocks.

So i have two different binaries, Reveltronics and Willem.
Reveltronics does not look ok, Willem is fine.

With Good old GQ-4X I needed to unlock the flash and was able to flash all data with verify fine.

How do I unlock with Reveltronics and how do I flash this chip.
Software complains, that the power is above 200mA and other errors..

I have latest IS software (1.9.0).

Is there something wrong?

REVELPROG-IS is powered from USB, when you power external board you also power all circuit around from this USB - power is limited. If you have current consumption error after increasing limit to 200mA there is not much you can do. Power line is not only connected to VCC pin - it's also connected to WriteProtect pin (to unlock the device) and often to HOLD pin. You can try to decrease voltage (so other devices on the same board will stay in reset state and drain less current). During programming in external circuit it's also recommended to decrease SCK speed. But all this issues are described in manual Chapter 5 (I hope you already read it before programming in circuit). You can also try with external power supply. These tricks often helps, but when nothing helps - you need to program it in adapter, I'm 100% sure it will work (it will not work without adapter e.g. on wires directly on clip). Please feel free to ask if you will have any further questions.

Thanks for your respond,
i tried this in circuit and out of circuit.

So i desoldered the MX25L1606E and still have problems in reading the chip with reveltronics.
The Rev shows this chip most of the time empty or only with a few bits flipped.

Still the GQ-4X is better for this chip...

It should be 100/100 correct readings. Are you programming in adapter or on wires? Are you selecting FLASH -> 25 series -> 25..016 [PP] ? Does programmer still pass hardware test? Please make sure that you are also using USB cable from set (it's for HighSpeed tranmission - double shielded) and it's plugged directly to motherboard port - without any hubs in the middle.

I am reading on wires with POMONA Clip, i read with the same clip and the GQ-4X.

I tried all Variants of FLASH 25 Series 25..016.
Programmer hardware test is fine and i use the USB cable from the set.
It´s plugged in to the motherboard (Dell Precision T3420).

I should get a Adapter SOIC-8/DIL-8 200mil ZIF in the next days and will test with these.
I use the latest Software 1.9.0

Is the MX25L1605D AND the MX25L1606E supported?
I think the EM1, EM2 and EP are only different in layout.

These chips are the same from programming point of view. Differences does not matter when you programming them in adapter.
Programming on pomona clip and wires will not work with this speed. I'm sure that in adapter will work, but you can also try to decrease programming speed to 10% and maybe it will work on wires (view -> hw overwrite bar -> SCK = 10%)
