How do I know the device is connected to a chip?
Silly question, but how do I know I am connected to my chip? I can select "read" even when nothing is attached.

Programmer does not check connections so it's user responsibility. It has built in overload and short circuit protection but it does not check if your connections are right.

is there a way to know the device still works correctly or not? i had read 2 pcs 93c66 with clip lately.. and both gave me only FFFF. A friend told me that it could be just the clip that has damaged.. hopefully he is right.

The most reliable method for checking if chip is not damaged is to check it directly in programmer/in adapter.
This is microwire chip and even if you do not have communication with this you will get 0xFF buffer.
You can also check contact pins between chip and clip, e.g. with multimeter between device in circuit and programmer's zif (green) socket.
