Can anyone share pics of the hall effect sensor install on a motor? How close do the magnet and sensor need to be?

Usually 1-3mm is fine. Please take a look for short manual for connection diagram:

Do you know if there is a limit to how quickly the sensor can track? For vehicle speed, I'm considering mounting the magnets on the drive shaft, which has a ~5" diameter. That means it will be spinning pretty fast, around 3,500 RPM @ 60mph. If I put on 2 magnets, that would be 7,000 RPM @ 60mph, which is around 116 hits/sec if I did all my math right.

I've switched gears... found a mechanical to electrical adapter, which will be much easier, as long as it works.
